BUBANZA July 27th (ABP) – Modern beekeeping is one of the profitable activities which not only provides income but also creates jobs, we learned from members of the Cooperative of Young Graduate Beekeepers (COJAD), established in Bubanza province (north-west of Burundi).

According to the provincial manager of that cooperative, Mr. Lazarre Ndayikengurukiye, it is made up of 100 members, including 35 women and 95% of graduates.

The COJAD has 286 hives full of bees, in 7 sites scattered in different localities of Bubanza province, 8 young graduates and 12 watchmen have already been hired with a contract of between 6 months and a year, he continues.

The head of COJAD said that modern beekeeping is practiced with modern hives. Those are large compared to traditional ones, and are made of wood.

The annual production per hive is estimated between 15 and 40 kilograms of honey, while a traditional hive produces between 8 and 15 kg of honey per year.

Mr. Ndayikengurukiye indicates that the cooperative has gone from a capital of 3 million BIF, in May 2020, to 24.5 million FBu in 2022.

It invites other young people, especially graduates, to organize themselves into cooperatives, and to diversify income-generating activities.
