The Prime Minister received in audience the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system and the Apostolic Nuncio to Burundi

BUJUMBURA July 3rd (ABP) – The Prime Minister of the Republic of Burundi, Mr. Alain Guillaume Bunyoni, received in audience on Thursday, June 30, 2022, at the presidential palace Ntare Rushatsi, the resident coordinator of the United Nations system to Burundi, Mr. Damien Mama and the Apostolic Nuncio to Burundi, Mgr. Dieudonné Datanou.

On the sidelines of the audience, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system to Burundi indicated that he came for a courtesy visit and to brief the Prime Minister on the work of the United Nations system in Burundi, which is composed of 7 organizations and entities present in Burundi. He reported that he took the opportunity to brief him on the evolution of the formulation of their new sustainable development cooperation frameworks.

To that end, Mr. Mama reported to the Prime Minister on the progress of the implementation of the new approach adopted by the United Nations General Secretariat since 2019, aiming to change the concept of development aid to development cooperation, he said. He indicated that he also sought guidance from the Prime Minister regarding the content of that approach that those UN agencies will adopt globally.

Mr. Mama took note of the Prime Minister’s orientations with regard to Burundi’s development priorities, stressing that the United Nations system in Burundi will take them into account so that the contents of its plans and programs can be better aligned with the development ambitions of Burundi.

As for the Apostolic Nuncio to Burundi, he indicated that he exchanged with the Prime Minister on issues of common interest between the Holy See and Burundi, not only in the spiritual field, but also in the fields of education, health, promotion of peace and reconciliation and integral human development. He took the opportunity to greet the people of Burundi and wish them a happy celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of independence.

The Prime Minister’s spokesman, Mr. Moïse Nkurunziza, said that the exchanges between the Prime Minister and the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system in Burundi were fruitful where the latter promised that the UN agencies working in Burundi are ready to support the government of Burundi in its programs aimed at achieving sustainable development. The Prime Minister positively appreciated the work of UN agencies in Burundi before asking the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system to Burundi to continue to align with the National Development Program (PND 2018-2027), added Mr. Nkurunziza. Mr. Nkurunziza also indicated that the Apostolic Nuncio to Burundi has promised the Prime Minister that the Catholic Church will continue to work with Burundi at the spiritual level and for the well-being of the people.
