BUJUMBURA February 9th (ABP) – In the framework of protecting, preserving and safeguarding Burundi’s cultural heritage, the Ministry of East African Community Affairs, Youth, Sports and Culture suspended on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 the slam festival organized by the “Buja sans tabou” team, held from February 7, 2022, in Bujumbura City Council.

The Minister responsible for culture, Mr. Ezéchiel Nibigira, pointed out that this decision Ref: 1701/435/CM/2022, a copy of which for information was sent to the Minister in charge of Public Security, Mr. Gervais Ndirakobuca, was taken following the displayed behavior not respecting the sacred principles of the emblematic dance of “Umurisho w’Ingoma”, which was observed on the day of the official launch of the activities organized by the “Buja sans tabou” team from 7 to February 11, 2022 where the drummers arrogated to themselves the right to show off in suits.

After receiving that notification from the ministry responsible for youth and culture, the “Buja sans tabou” team expressed its most humble apology to the general public, but also to the authorities responsible for art and culture, through a press release published on their twitter account “Buja sans tabou”.

According to that team, this celebratory scene of the opening of the curtains of the 5th edition of the theater festival “Buja sans tabou” was only to illustrate this great contrast of one culture entering another, because, indeed, this 5th edition is above all a search for oneself, both artistic and personal.

To that end, the “Buja sans tabou” team has informed the general public of the suspension of all plays scheduled from February 8, 2022. “We remain in direct communication with the Ministry of East African Community Affairs, of Youth, Sports and Culture for the smooth running of the festival”, reported the team while concluding that the rest of the activities of the 5th edition of the festival will be communicated to the public through its various communication channels.
