The President of the Republic received in audience the delegation of the African Peer Review Mechanism as well as the Egyptian Ambassador to Burundi

BUJUMBURA January 26th (ABP) – The President of the Republic, Evariste Ndayishimiye received in audience, on Tuesday January 25, 2022, the delegation of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) led by Edward Maloka Director General of the APRM. He informed that this mechanism is an organ of the African Union which brings together the Heads of Member States. That body promotes good governance in Africa. Mr. Maloka said that the countries that are members share experiences on governance and good practices.

Speaking about the purpose of that visit, Mr. Maloka indicated that with his delegation, he had come to deliver to the Burundian President a letter from his counterpart, current President of the APRM, the South African, Cyril Ramaphosa, inviting Burundi to join that mechanism. The Director General of APRM said that this invitation was well received by the Head of State who promised that Burundi will join that mechanism. He added that the President of the Republic shared with that delegation, the good practices, in terms of the reforms undertaken, that Burundi can share with Africa. For his part, Mr. Maloka noted that the APRM will support Burundi in that process of change of reforms and transformation of society.

The President of the Republic also received in audience the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt to Burundi, Yassir Alatawi. Mr. Alatawi indicated that their exchanges concerned the bilateral relations between the 2 countries. He said that relations between Burundi and Egypt are historic, excellent and strong. He said that his country supports the reforms and development projects that the President of the Republic of Burundi has undertaken to bring prosperity and well-being to the Burundian people. They discussed the progress of the cooperation agreements between the 2 countries, in particular good governance, education, justice and the meeting scheduled for November to participate.

Yassir Alatawi said that during this audience, he had the opportunity to discuss with the President on projects that are important to bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Thus, he said that the Arab Republic of Egypt is committed to supporting Burundi in certain specific areas, namely the sectors: Health, agriculture, irrigation, to support the development of the country.

In the sector of health, there was a project to build a referral hospital in Burundi, with Egyptian medical staff who will work alongside Burundian staff when that project is completed.
