CANKUZO July 30th (ABP) – The chief of staff in the office of the governor of Cankuzo province (eastern Burundi), Mr. Pierre Claver Nakumuryango, held on Tuesday July 27, at the headquarters of the province, a meeting of the provincial risk prevention and disaster management platform whose goal was to review what has not been achieved and set the outlook for the future.

The sensitization of the people on the harmful effects of the bush fires continues, Nakumuryango said, warning that the perpetrators of the bushfires will be punished according to the law. Thus, people are called upon to protect the mountains by drawing firebreaks, he added. Moreover, people neighboring the mountains are sensitized to watch them to prevent possible bush fires, Mr. Nakumuryango insisted.

During that meeting organized with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the administrator of the commune of Cankuzo, Mrs. Chantal Irakoze, informed that three people accused of being the perpetrators of the bush fires have already been apprehended.

Note that some non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in Cankuzo province, namely the Council for Education and Development (COPED), Acord and World Vision were represented at the meeting, a check by ABP revealed.
